Gopal Purushottam Phadke was the first Kho Kho coach to win the award in 2000 for his guidance to young Kho Kho players in India. He played Kho Kho since his childhood, and his passion for the sport propelled him to become one of the top Kho Kho coaches in the country. O. M. Nambiar was the first coach from Kerala to win the Dronacharya Award in the year 1985 for his contribution to Athletics. Notably, there are a total of 8 coaches from Kerala were awarded and G Vimal Kumar was the last one from Kerala to receive the Dronacharya Award in Badminton in year 2019. The oldest National Sports Award in India, the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy or the MAKA Trophy was instituted in 1956–1957.

Dronachaya Awards are given in two categories (i) Regular Category (ii) Lifetime Category. The Awardees are given a statuette of Guru Dronacharya, a certificate, ceremonial dress and a cash prize of Rs. 5.00 lakh. The applications were invited online and sportspersons/coaches/entities were permitted to self-apply through a dedicated Online Portal. A large number of applications/nominations were received for these awards this year, which were considered by the Selection Committee headed by Justice A. M. Khanwilkar, Retd. Judge, Supreme Court of India and consisting members from eminent sportspersons, persons having experience in sports journalism and sports administrators.
